#7 Album of 2005
Spoon – Gimme Fiction[Merge Records; released 5/10/05]
I’d say Kill the Moonlight pretty much solidified Spoon as indie rock Gods, so having to follow up that masterpiece album was clearly no easy task. But, Gimme Fiction is a fantastic follow up. What’s great about this album is that Spoon is still doing what they do best, writing some catchy indie rock songs, yet you can tell they’re not just capitalizing on the sound that’s already worked for them in previous releases. The track “I Turn My Camera On” is a perfect example of Spoon being able to open up their music arsenal to create something like they never have before. The rest of the songs are diverse, but it is undeniably Spoon. This album is a perfect example of what great bands do: Keep their signature sound, but still allow for some redefining that shows there is still some creativity within the band (if only Coldplay could take notice). Gimme Fiction has the swagger and confidence that puts Spoon on a whole new level.
